A former Google safety chief is urging a slowdown in AI development, warning the industry is repeating social media's mistakes and could cause greater harm to children. Tom Siegel, ex-VP of trust and safety at Google, believes AI poses a deeper threat than social media, citing risks from suicide to psychosis and cognitive offloading. He has joined Common Sense Media to lead its new Youth AI Safety Institute, aiming to develop standards.
