Two New Subterranean Fish Species Discovered in Assam Wells
Mongabay India · environment
Researchers have identified two previously unknown species of subterranean fish in wells located in Assam, India. These newly described species are Gitchak nakana, a blind, transparent loach with a red appearance due to its visible blood and organs, and Rakthamichthys anchi, a blind, transparent swamp eel. The discovery highlights the poorly understood deeper groundwater systems in northeast India, which extend beyond 200 meters. Experts warn that surface water pollution can impact these underground habitats, emphasizing the need for monitoring and pollution control to protect these unique species.
