Kolkata's Dhapa dumping ground is facing a potential disaster as legacy waste exceeds 1 crore tonnes. The situation is critical due to the halted extraction of waste after the contract termination of the private agency. Poor functioning of existing garbage conversion plants and the underutilisation of a 73-hectare plot for new facilities have worsened the crisis. Civic officials warn that the overburdened mounds could collapse, threatening nearby residents and potentially causing a disaster larger than the Belgachhia incident.

कोलकाता का धापा डंपिंग ग्राउंड 1 करोड़ टन से ज़्यादा पुराने कचरे के कारण संभावित आपदा का सामना कर रहा है। निजी एजेंसी के अनुबंध समाप्त होने के बाद कचरे के निष्कर्षण के रुक जाने से स्थिति गंभीर हो गई है। मौजूदा कचरा रूपांतरण संयंत्रों के खराब कामकाज और नई सुविधाओं के लिए 73 हेक्टेयर ज़मीन के कम उपयोग ने संकट को और बढ़ा दिया है। नागरिक अधिकारियों ने चेतावनी दी है कि अत्यधिक बोझ वाले ढेर ढह सकते हैं, जिससे आस-पास के निवासियों को खतरा हो सकता है और संभवतः बेलगाछिया घटना से भी बड़ी आपदा हो सकती है।
