UN Extends Darfur Arms Embargo By Two Months, Blocks Wider Sudan Sanctions

Al Jazeera · world

The UN Security Council has unanimously extended the arms embargo on Sudan's Darfur region for two months, until December 11. This decision allows more time for negotiations on the sanctions regime, which was first imposed in 2005. However, a US proposal to expand the embargo to the entire country was blocked by Russia and China. The US had argued the current sanctions are outdated and insufficient for the ongoing war. Russia stated it would not allow any broadening of restrictions on Sudan.
