BBC World · world

Chinese authorities have dismissed reports of a suspected artillery shell found in Papua New Guinea, claiming it is a "shell-shaped wine bottle" that poses no danger. The 32kg object was discovered at a construction site in Port Moresby, leading to the arrest of four Chinese nationals. Local reports, citing unnamed sources, identified the item as an undetonated Chinese Type 59 Artillery Projectile. However, the Chinese embassy stated it is "virtually impossible" for such a military-grade shell to be smuggled out of China, citing strict firearm control laws.
