Israel's Asiatic Wild Ass Herd Grows to 250 After Reintroduction

Between 1982 and 1993, Israel reintroduced 38 Asiatic wild asses to the Negev desert. Initially extinct in the region by the 1920s, the herd has now grown to approximately 250 individuals. Researchers used non-invasive methods like counting at watering holes and DNA sampling to study the population. Despite the increase in numbers, genetic analysis reveals that fewer than 25% of males participate in mating each generation, raising concerns about the herd's long-term health.
