Melting Glaciers May Create Over 50,000 New Lakes

Scientists warn that melting glaciers could lead to the formation of over 50,000 new lakes in currently frozen regions. A study published in Nature Communications mapped the areas beneath global glaciers, predicting 56,659 new lakes as ice disappears. This phenomenon poses an increased risk of flooding in vulnerable areas such as Asia, the Andes, Alaska, and the Arctic.
