Conservators in Edinburgh discovered a hidden self-portrait of Vincent van Gogh in 2022 while X-raying a painting. The portrait, concealed for over a century under glue and cardboard, was found on the reverse of an earlier work titled 'Head of a Peasant Woman.' This discovery sheds light on Van Gogh's practice of reusing canvases due to poverty during his lifetime. The artwork was found during a routine examination ahead of an exhibition at the National Galleries of Scotland.
