Tennessee River Straightened in 1916 Now Being Restored

Times of India · environment

Authorities in Tennessee have acquired 985 acres to restore the South Fork of the Forked Deer River, which was straightened in 1916 to drain land. This modification has since led to increased flooding, erosion, and sand deposits near Jackson. The restoration project aims to reconnect the river with its natural floodplain, thereby reducing future flood risks for communities like East Jackson and Bemis. While the project will improve water quality and wildlife habitats, officials caution that it will not completely eliminate flooding.
