3 Lakh People Live in Disaster-Prone Himalayan Areas: Study

BBC Hindi · environment

A new study reveals that at least three lakh people reside in disaster-prone regions across parts of the Himalayas, including northern Nepal, southeastern Tibet, and Uttarakhand in India. Between 2016 and 2023, construction in these high-risk zones increased by approximately 45%. Areas susceptible to glacial lake outburst floods saw an even steeper rise in construction, growing by nearly 78%. Researchers warn the actual number of people at risk could be significantly higher, as the study focused on a specific region.
