Chicago River Reversed 126 Years Ago, Flows Backwards

Chicago reversed its river in 1900 to divert sewage from Lake Michigan, a problem stemming from the city drawing drinking water from the lake while emptying sewers into the river. Engineers dug the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, creating a ditch to redirect the flow towards the Mississippi River basin. This monumental engineering feat, the largest earth-moving enterprise of its time, pioneered techniques used in the Panama Canal.
