Thousands of protesters gathered in Brussels to demonstrate against the federal government's austerity plans, organized by the country's socialist trade union. While the main rally proceeded peacefully, a smaller group clashed with police, throwing objects and setting fires, leading to a response with tear gas and water cannons. Police stated these troublemakers were not linked to the main union march. The protests targeted government measures affecting purchasing power, wage indexation, and VAT. Around 30,000 people reportedly attended the demonstrations.
