Dudhwa National Park Tests Free-Ranging Rhinos After Four Decades in Enclosures

The Better India · lifestyle

Dudhwa Tiger Reserve in Uttar Pradesh is now testing the feasibility of free-ranging greater one-horned rhinos. In March 2026, four rhinos were moved from protected enclosures into suitable grassland habitats, bringing the free-ranging population to eight. The reserve aims to eventually have 10 rhinos roaming freely as part of a broader conservation strategy. A June 2026 census counted 53 rhinos in Dudhwa, with eight of them now part of this experiment.
