पूर्व केंद्रीय मंत्री मणि शंकर अय्यर ने भाजपा नीत सरकार की पाकिस्तान के साथ बातचीत न करने की आलोचना की है। उन्होंने कहा कि सरकार में सर्जिकल स्ट्राइक का साहस तो है, लेकिन मुद्दों को सुलझाने के लिए बातचीत की इच्छा नहीं है। अय्यर ने बातचीत जारी रखने के लिए वाघा-अटारी सीमा पर मिलने का सुझाव दिया, इस बात पर जोर देते हुए कि पिछले मुद्दों पर बहस करना विदेश नीति नहीं है। उनका मानना है कि केवल निरंतर बातचीत से ही रचनात्मक परिणाम संभव हैं, और उन्होंने अमेरिका-रूस मॉडल का हवाला दिया। अय्यर ने पाकिस्तान के साथ नई बातचीत शुरू करने को राष्ट्रीय राजनीतिक एकता से भी जोड़ा।
