Coins Removed From Giant's Causeway To Protect Site

Over 20 kilograms of coins, estimated to be around 10,000 pieces, have been removed from the cracks of Northern Ireland's Giant's Causeway. Visitors had been placing coins in the 60-million-year-old basalt columns for good luck, but the practice was causing significant damage. The coins oxidise and expand, exerting pressure that fractures the rock. A stonemason spent nearly 200 hours carefully extracting the embedded coins to preserve the World Heritage Site.
