Calcutta HC Dismisses Congress Petition on Candidate's Age

The Calcutta High Court has dismissed a petition filed by the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee challenging the nomination of BJP candidate Hasirani Rath for the Nandigram bypoll. The Congress alleged a discrepancy in Rath's age and her Class 10 passing year, questioning how she could have passed in 1965 if her age was over 60. The court observed that any interference now would directly affect the ongoing election process. However, the court kept the option of an election petition open for the Congress to pursue later.

कलकत्ता हाई कोर्ट ने पश्चिम बंगाल प्रदेश कांग्रेस कमेटी की उस याचिका को खारिज कर दिया है जिसमें बीजेपी उम्मीदवार हसरानी रथ के नंदीग्राम उपचुनाव के लिए नामांकन को चुनौती दी गई थी। कांग्रेस ने रथ की उम्र और उनके 10वीं कक्षा पास करने के साल में विसंगति का आरोप लगाया था, यह सवाल उठाते हुए कि अगर उनकी उम्र 60 साल से ज़्यादा थी तो वह 1965 में कैसे पास हो सकती थीं। कोर्ट ने कहा कि अभी कोई भी हस्तक्षेप सीधे तौर पर चल रही चुनाव प्रक्रिया को प्रभावित करेगा। हालांकि, कोर्ट ने कांग्रेस के लिए बाद में चुनाव याचिका दायर करने का विकल्प खुला रखा है।
