UN Security Council Fails to Agree on Western Sahara Mission Mandate

Competing resolutions from the United States and Russia concerning the UN peacekeeping mission in Western Sahara have failed at the UN Security Council. Russia vetoed a US-backed proposal, which aimed to extend the mission for a year and remove "referendum" from its name, while making Morocco's autonomy plan the sole basis for talks. A subsequent Russian draft also failed to gain sufficient support. The mandate for the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) is set to expire, leaving its future uncertain.

पश्चिमी सहारा में संयुक्त राष्ट्र शांति मिशन को लेकर संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिका और रूस के प्रतिस्पर्धी प्रस्ताव संयुक्त राष्ट्र सुरक्षा परिषद में विफल हो गए हैं। रूस ने अमेरिका समर्थित प्रस्ताव को वीटो कर दिया, जिसका उद्देश्य मिशन को एक साल के लिए बढ़ाना और इसके नाम से "जनमत संग्रह" हटाना था, साथ ही मोरक्को की स्वायत्तता योजना को बातचीत का एकमात्र आधार बनाना था। बाद में रूसी मसौदे को भी पर्याप्त समर्थन नहीं मिला। पश्चिमी सहारा में जनमत संग्रह के लिए संयुक्त राष्ट्र मिशन (MINURSO) का जनादेश समाप्त होने वाला है, जिससे इसका भविष्य अनिश्चित हो गया है।
