Understanding Type I and Type II Errors in Science and Elections

The Hindu - Science · science

Type I and Type II errors are crucial concepts in scientific testing. A Type I error, or false positive, occurs when a true null hypothesis is wrongly rejected, like concluding a drug works when it doesn't. Conversely, a Type II error, a false negative, happens when a false null hypothesis is not rejected, meaning a drug's ineffectiveness is missed. The Election Commission of India faces similar errors during voter list revisions, where eligible voters might be wrongly removed (false positive) or ineligible individuals included (false negative).
