Seattle Woman Refused $1 Million Buyout, Lived Surrounded By Shopping Complex

Hindustan Times · interesting

Edith Macefield, a Seattle resident, famously refused a reported $1 million offer from developers in 2006 to buy her home. Developers proceeded to build a large shopping complex, the Ballard Blocks, around her 1,050-square-foot house, leaving it hemmed in on three sides. Despite the surrounding construction, Macefield remained in her home, which she had lived in for over 40 years. She passed away in the house in June 2008, fulfilling her wish to die there. Her will left the property to the project's superintendent, who later sold it.
