Toyota has revealed its next-generation hybrid powertrain, featuring an entirely new 1.5-litre, four-cylinder engine. This integrated system is designed for future multi-pathway vehicle platforms, targeting a fuel economy improvement exceeding 15%. The new engine will cover existing hybrid applications currently served by 1.8-litre and 1.5-litre three-cylinder units, offering more power and torque. Toyota aims for reduced mechanical friction, improved thermal management, and lower electrical losses to achieve better efficiency. This development supports a common architecture for electric, plug-in hybrid, and hybrid vehicles, enhancing manufacturing flexibility.
