Icy Object Beyond Pluto Reignites Debate On Planet Definition

Times of India · science

A newly discovered icy object, 2026 ED138, orbiting beyond Pluto has reignited the debate about what qualifies as a planet. Detected by the Vera C Rubin Observatory, its size is estimated between 600 and 1,500 km, and it orbits the Sun at 46 times the Earth-Sun distance. If confirmed as a dwarf planet, it would join Pluto and four other celestial bodies. Further observations are needed to confirm its size and classification, as scientists must determine if its gravity shapes it into a nearly round form.
