Sisters' Cornish Island Becomes Wildlife Haven

Two sisters, Evelyn and Babs Atkins, purchased Looe Island off the Cornwall coast in the 1960s and resided there for decades. Upon their deaths, the island was bequeathed to the Cornwall Wildlife Trust, which now manages it as a nature reserve. The island operates without mains water or grid electricity, relying on self-sufficient gardens for sustenance. It is a vital habitat for various nesting birds, including large populations of great black-backed gulls, as well as gray seals and thriving butterfly species.
