Anti-inflammatory Drugs May Aid Viral Spread, Scientists Warn
Times of India · science
Certain anti-inflammatory drugs, specifically Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors, may weaken the body's immune response and facilitate the spread of viruses like COVID-19 and influenza. Researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology discovered that these medications can suppress crucial immune signalling pathways, leaving healthy cells more vulnerable to viral attacks. This effect was observed in studies involving lung, eye, and brain cells, as well as mini-organs. While effective for inflammatory conditions, JAK inhibitors could pose a hidden risk to patients with existing viral infections.
Norwegian University of Science and Technology
