Dhanteras is known for purchasing gold and silver, but also features Yama Deepam, a lesser-known ritual honouring Lord Yama, the deity of death. This tradition involves lighting an earthen lamp, often with four wicks, to pray for good health and long life for loved ones. Unlike wealth-focused Lakshmi Puja, Yama Deepam emphasizes valuing life and gratitude for well-being. The lamp is traditionally placed outside the main entrance, facing south, during sunset, with prayers for protection against untimely death.
