AI Data Centres Drive Up India's Power Grid Upgrade Costs Significantly
The Hindu - Business · business
India's power grid is facing increased pressure and higher upgrade costs due to the booming demand from AI data centres. The North Eastern Regional Power Committee (NERPC) highlighted that the cost to upgrade the SCADA/EMS system has jumped from ₹521 crore to ₹688 crore, driven by rising hardware expenses. This escalating cost is partly due to AI-driven demand making essential components more expensive. Regional committees are also concerned about the "ramping impact" on states when data centres collectively purchase electricity, potentially straining generators and leading to penalties.
