SEBI is set to broaden the framework for alternative investment funds (AIFs) by easing eligibility criteria for accredited investors. This move is expected to significantly increase the pool of accredited investors from the current one lakh to four lakh. SEBI plans to recognise assets with high growth potential and may allow direct client onboarding by investment managers. While expanding the AIF industry, former SEBI chairman UK Sinha cautioned that investments must also deliver social and economic benefits, not just returns.
