Brazilian Pepper Plant Infests Over 700,000 Acres In Florida
Hindustan Times · environment
Introduced to Florida as an ornamental shrub, the Brazilian peppertree has become one of the state's most problematic invasive plants, now infesting over 700,000 acres. Native to South America, it was brought to Florida in the 1840s and spreads rapidly, forming dense thickets that outcompete native vegetation and threaten biodiversity. The plant's fruit is toxic to wildlife, and its pollen and sap can cause allergic reactions in humans. Scientists are now testing a biological control agent, the Brazilian peppertree thrips, to manage its growth and reduce fruit production.
