Sri Lanka Prioritizes National Interest Over Assisting Stranded Iranian Tankers

Times of India · world

Sri Lanka has stated it will not assist 19 Iranian oil tankers anchored near its coast, citing national interest and the risk of US secondary sanctions. While the US has not directly threatened sanctions, the possibility appears to influence Colombo's decision. The tankers are stranded in Sri Lanka's Exclusive Economic Zone due to Middle East conflict and naval blockades. Although international law requires assisting vessels in distress, Sri Lanka's obligation to supply the ships is unclear, and it appears to be deferring to private sector involvement.
