An investigation by the Citizen Lab has confirmed that Israeli ad-tech firm Discover-Tech assisted in placing spyware on devices used by Al Jazeera and other entities. The spyware, from the US-blacklisted firm Candiru, was deployed using a novel 'zero-click' targeted advertising method. Al Jazeera's internal team first detected unusual activity on journalists' devices in 2024, prompting a deeper investigation. The network condemned the targeting of journalists as an assault on press freedom and vowed to protect its staff and systems.
