IITs Plan Dedicated Mental Health Cadre For Students, Faculty, Staff

Indian Institutes of Technology are planning to establish a dedicated cadre of mental health professionals to support the psychological well-being of students, faculty, and staff across all campuses. This initiative, deliberated upon for at least two years, aims to provide a sustainable, long-term solution beyond current counselling services. The move comes amid concerns over student suicides on campuses in recent years, although directors state the plan predates these specific incidents. IIT Gandhinagar is developing a framework for this cadre, which will include sanctioned posts for counsellors, psychologists, and psychiatrists.
