Taxman Adds Rs 55.2 Lakh Unexplained Money; ITAT Grants Relief After Proof of Family Contributions
Times of India · business
A man jointly purchased a property with his father and wife but did not file his income tax return for the relevant assessment year. The tax department reopened his case and added Rs 55.2 lakh as unexplained investment, considering the contributions from his family members inadequately explained. However, the Mumbai bench of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal (ITAT) has now deleted this addition. The tribunal reviewed additional evidence, including bank statements and financial records, which established the property was jointly owned and funded by identifiable sources from the family.
