US Consulate Builder Pays 31 Million Euros

Caddell Construction, building the new US consulate in Milan, has agreed to a 31 million euro settlement for foreign workers paid less than $2 an hour. The settlement includes back pay and damages for nearly 300 workers, many from India, who faced exploitative labour practices. Italian Labour Minister Marina Calderone called the probe significant against illegal labour contracting. The construction site has been placed under judicial administration as a criminal investigation into the company and its managers continues.

मिलान में नया यूएस दूतावास बनाने वाली Caddell Construction कंपनी ने विदेशी मजदूरों को प्रति घंटे 2 डॉलर से कम भुगतान करने के लिए 31 मिलियन यूरो के निपटान पर सहमति व्यक्त की है। इस निपटान में लगभग 300 मजदूरों, जिनमें से कई भारत से थे, के लिए बकाया वेतन और हर्जाना शामिल है, जिन्हें शोषणकारी श्रम प्रथाओं का सामना करना पड़ा। इटली की श्रम मंत्री Marina Calderone ने अवैध श्रम अनुबंध के खिलाफ इस जांच को महत्वपूर्ण बताया। कंपनी और उसके प्रबंधकों के खिलाफ आपराधिक जांच जारी रहने के कारण निर्माण स्थल को न्यायिक प्रशासन के अधीन कर दिया गया है।
