Raccoons Show Remarkable Problem-Solving Skills Even After Food Is Gone

Researchers from the University of British Columbia tested raccoons' problem-solving abilities using a custom nine-way puzzle box. Sixteen adult raccoons participated in trials where they had to solve increasingly difficult mechanisms to access a single marshmallow. Astonishingly, the raccoons continued to explore and solve new puzzle mechanisms even after consuming the marshmallow and knowing no more food was inside. This behaviour, termed 'information foraging,' suggests a strong innate drive for exploration and learning in these animals, as all but one raccoon solved multiple solutions within single trials.
