Europe Likely Origin of First Bats, Study Finds

A new study combining genomes, fossils, and anatomical data suggests bats likely originated in Europe, challenging previous theories. Researchers reconstructed the bat family tree using chromosome-level genomes from 103 species. The findings also indicate that echolocation was present in very early bats, potentially as old as bat flight itself. This research addresses long-standing mysteries about bat evolution and their unique abilities.
