India's Coral Reefs to Be Monitored for El Niño Impact

Times of India · science

CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) in Goa has initiated a nationwide effort involving 23 institutions to monitor coral bleaching and assess the impact of El Niño and marine heatwaves on India's coral reefs. The National Coordination Mission aims to identify vulnerable and resilient reefs to guide conservation priorities. Scientists discussed emerging technologies for monitoring, including robotics and underwater photogrammetry. The coordinated data will help validate climate models, understand thermal stress responses, and inform government conservation strategies.
