Canada's Prairie Grassland Still Unrecovered 19 Years After Spruce Tree Removal
Hindustan Times · environment
Prairie land in Canada's Riding Mountain National Park, converted to white spruce plantations between 1928 and 1950, has failed to recover its original state even 19 years after tree removal. A study found that cleared plots did not resemble untouched prairie, with an increase in weedy and invasive species while native grasses like rough fescue were absent. Soil analysis revealed that the nematode community, crucial for soil health, also did not revert to its native prairie state. These findings highlight the long-lasting ecological damage caused by such interventions.
