Scientist Vijay Bhatkar Led India's First Supercomputer Build

The Better India · lifestyle

In the late 1980s, India faced a challenge in acquiring supercomputer technology for scientific research, weather forecasting, defence, and space exploration. The United States restricted access to Cray supercomputers due to potential military applications. In response, India decided to develop its own indigenous supercomputing system. Led by scientist Vijay Bhatkar, the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) was established in Pune in 1988. This effort culminated in the unveiling of PARAM 8000 in 1991, achieving a peak performance of one billion floating-point operations per second.
