India's Elderly Women Face Poverty and Destitution Due to Poor Social Security
Hindustan Times · health
India's rapidly ageing population presents a growing development challenge, particularly for elderly women who face significant poverty and destitution due to inadequate social security. Women outnumber men in the elderly population, and while they live longer, they often experience higher morbidities and lack financial independence due to illiteracy and limited pension coverage. Only 7.8% of elderly women who have worked in the organised sector receive a pension, far below the 23.2% for men.
