UC San Diego Biologists Find Genetic Switch For Butterfly's Enhanced Colour Vision

Times of India · science

Researchers at UC San Diego have identified the specific genetic switch responsible for butterflies possessing an extra light-detecting cell in their eyes. While most insects have eight photoreceptors per eye unit, butterflies have nine, granting them a broader colour spectrum. This upgrade is crucial for tasks like finding nectar and mates. Scientists successfully replicated this butterfly-like eye structure in fruit flies by introducing the genetic change, demonstrating how evolution can leverage existing biological flexibility. The fly brain already had surplus neurons that could connect to the new cell.

UC San Diego
