Greece Urges EU to Suspend Asylum During Mass Migration Surges

Greece has called on the European Union to allow member states to temporarily suspend asylum applications during periods of mass migration. Migration Minister Thanos Plevris stated that current rules cannot handle emergencies like the surge in Spain’s Ceuta this summer. He argued that in such cases, enhanced border surveillance and asylum suspension should be implemented. The proposal, submitted to EU interior ministers, appeared to gain support from some member states, including the Netherlands, which views such arrivals as a border management issue.
