Suppliers Charging Vendors Extra for UPI Payments Before MDR Levy: ISB Survey

Business Standard · stocks

A recent Indian School of Business survey reveals that approximately 10.4% of vendors are already facing additional charges from their suppliers for UPI payments. This practice is occurring despite the absence of a formal Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on such transactions. The survey, conducted across 14 states and Union Territories, found that vendors often face these extra charges when opting for UPI over cash payments. While MDR is intended to be levied on specific person-to-merchant transactions above ₹2,000, suppliers are preemptively imposing fees.
