India's Finance Ministry has countered opposition claims about the banking system's health by reporting a record net profit of ₹1.98 lakh crore for public sector banks in FY2025-26. This profit surge is linked to successful banking reforms and a significant reduction in Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) to a multi-decade low of 1.93%. The ministry also clarified that most banks have waived or reduced minimum balance charges and highlighted demonetisation's role in formalising the economy and boosting digital payments.
