GSTN to Expand E-way Bill Numbers to 14 Digits from January 2027

The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) will increase e-way bill numbers from 12 to 14 digits starting January 1, 2027, due to surging volumes. The consolidated e-way bill number will also expand from 10 to 11 digits. This change aims to build capacity for future growth and prevent operational disruptions as e-way bill generation has seen a significant rise, nearly 83% from FY22 to FY26. The update is a backend technology upgrade and does not alter existing GST compliance rules for businesses.
