Thousands of Migratory Birds Arrive Early at Chennai's Muttukadu-Nemmeli Estuary

Times of India · environment

Thousands of waders and shorebirds, including Marsh sandpipers and Common greenshanks, have arrived at Chennai's Muttukadu-Nemmeli estuarine habitats ahead of the official migratory bird season. These birds travel thousands of kilometers from northern countries, using the Kovalam-Kelambakkam backwaters as an entry point before moving to areas like the Pallikaranai marsh. The Nature Trust recorded over 5,568 waders and shorebirds, with numbers expected to increase. Environmentalists suggest the temporary halt in work on a proposed reservoir may have also contributed to their early arrival.
