CMFRI Launches First Open-Sea Mussel Farming Unit at Vizhinjam

The ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) has launched its first full-fledged open-sea mussel longline farming unit at Vizhinjam. This initiative, supported by the Department of Fisheries, aims to develop sustainable mussel farming technologies and create new livelihood opportunities for coastal communities. The project incorporates advanced hatchery and nursery technologies for large-scale seed production. Preliminary trials were successful along the Kanyakumari coast, and the Vizhinjam unit will assess mussel growth and economic viability in local open-sea conditions.
