A Laotian citizen deported to Eswatini by the United States under the Trump administration's immigration program has been released from prison after more than a year. Phone Chomsavanh was sent to the African nation in July 2025, despite having no ties there, and was held in a maximum-security facility without being charged. His lawyer stated he was informed of the deportation shortly before landing. Chomsavanh has now been deported to Laos. This third-country deportation program has faced criticism from rights groups and legal challenges.
