New Squid Family Discovered From Single Specimen Found In Whale Stomach
Times of India · science
Scientists have identified an entirely new family of oceanic squids based on a single specimen recovered from the stomach of a sperm whale. The squid, named Mobydickia poseidonii, was found in Antarctic or sub-Antarctic waters and possesses distinctive white skin, no photophores, and unique arm hooks. Researchers examined its morphology and DNA, noting significant differences from known species. This discovery highlights the vast, unexplored biodiversity within the world's oceans and the potential for new findings even from limited samples.
