Hong Kong Rejects US Human Trafficking Report, Citing 'Double Standard'

Hong Kong has strongly refuted the US State Department's decision to downgrade it to Tier 3 in its annual human trafficking report, calling the assessment "entirely unfounded." The Hong Kong government accused Washington of applying double standards and stated that human trafficking is not prevalent in the city. The US report cited insufficient prosecution of suspected traffickers and inadequate victim identification within the territory. Hong Kong authorities investigated more cases in 2025 but prosecuted fewer suspects, while convictions for sex traffickers received short sentences.
