Kerala Merchants Warn UPI Charges Could Fuel Inflation, Push Back To Cash
The Hindu · india
The Kerala Textile & Garments Association (KTGA) has strongly opposed proposed Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) charges on UPI transactions. They warn that imposing these fees on businesses will increase operational costs, potentially leading to higher prices for consumers and driving merchants back to cash payments. The association argues that merchants have been instrumental in promoting digital payments and should not bear the system's maintenance costs. KTGA suggests that the estimated annual operating cost of UPI be shared by institutional beneficiaries and funded through tax revenues.
