Farmer Suicide Highlights Compensation Gap Due to Land Ownership Rules

Times of India · india

A farmer's suicide in Haveri district has exposed a critical gap in compensation rules, as his family was denied assistance because the agricultural land was owned by his father. The young farmer died by suicide due to crop loss and financial distress, despite managing cultivation and loans himself. Current government norms require both land and loan records to be in the deceased's name, disregarding the reality of joint family farming practices. This has led to the rejection of compensation claims, even when the deceased was the primary cultivator.
